Update 86  DEBBIE WOHLER, TAHOE CITY, CA  FEBRUARY 17, 2012

Favorite quotes from the children this month:

Clyde is a 4 year old.  Nell looked at Clyde and said, “Clyde you look sad.  Are you sad?”  Clyde said, “Yes!”  Nell asked, “What made you sad?”  Clyde replied, “Miss Emily said I had to eat my sandwich and it broke my heart!”  Don’t you wish that having to eat a sandwich was your biggest heartbreak in life?  J

I was working with the older children downstairs.  One of the kids asked me how long I’d been working with kids?  I said, “32 years!”  The child replied, “That’s longer than my Mom’s been alive!”  One of my friends who just turned 40 heard what this child said to me and laughed so hard.  Then one of the kids asked my 40 year friend if she was the Mom of the 27 year old standing next to her.  It was my turn to laugh!

Will, a four year old went to a birthday party at “Chuckie Cheese” which is a pizza place with games.  When he was telling his teacher about the birthday party he said he went to “Chuckie Jesus.”

The preschoolers were hearing the Bible verse about how man looks at the outward appearance but that God looks at the heart.  Tiffanie was trying to help them understand that how our hearts are with God is more important than how we look on the outside.  She asked the question, “Why do you think God looks at the heart?”  Levi, a 4 year old answered, “You can be really strong on the outside, but if your heart isn’t strong, you’ll have a heart attack and die.” After the laughter the lesson was clarified!

Favorite things I’ve seen God do this month

Rory, a first grader, was doing his homework.  He looked up at me and said, “God rocks!”  I got teary.  I told him that God does rock and that He also is our rock and way to salvation.  He has been so resistant to the God.  When he goes home his parents tell him that all of the God stories we tell him aren’t true.  Yet in spite of this, he spontaneously says “God rocks!” when he is practicing his spelling words.  The Holy Spirit is convicting this young man of the truth about God.    One of our semester missionaries was babysitting for Rory.  He had received a Bible from his A+ teacher.  Rory asked the babysitter to read from the Bible to him.

Fernando, a 3rd grader, got off the bus and gave me the biggest hug.  He then said, “Miss Debbie, Will you adopt me?”  My heart melted.  I told him I’d love to adopt him but that he already has a family.  He is being raised by his grandmother.  I talked to Fernando about how when we invite Jesus into our lives He adopts us into His family.

We had 83 kids at PNO this past month.  It is wonderful that so many people trust us with their children.  I wish you could be there to see how tired there are when they walk in the door to drop their children off and how refreshed they look when they pick them up.  One of the Dads asked me how we do this after such a long day of work.  I told him that God gives us the strength and that we want them to know that we love them and that God loves them.

One of the third through sixth grade boys came out of Bible study time crying.  I pulled him aside and talked with him.  His Dad died of cancer this past year and during prayer time he started really missing his Dad.  He sat down and talked for a few minutes.  We talked about heaven and how God takes care of people who are there.  I reminded him that there is no pain or sorrow in heaven.  I talked to him about how we can be sure that we go to heaven too.

I continue to talk with a man named Rick.  He fights so hard against God.  His kids grew up in our programs. One of his sons got in trouble with the law and we were there for the family by going to visit him in jail and showing up at court dates.  The son has totally changed his life and is doing well.  Rick said to me the other day on the phone, “My pagan heart is finding it harder to ignore God.  He said he believed that his son’s turn around was a miracle of God.”

We still are struggling with lack of snow.  However, I want to tell you that just two days after I sent out the last update and asked you to pray for snow we got a foot and a half of snow.  You all are champion prayer warriors!  We will need more snow.  Keep praying.  Attendance at ski ministry has been down.  However, our ski chaplains have been so creative and faithful.  They’ve held services inside a deli in a ski area and at other lifts that were open when the lift we hold services at were closed.  I do marvel at how even though there are lower numbers of people skiing that God continues to bring us people from all around the world.  One of our missionaries was able to talk about how she is serving God here with a woman with a French accent.  People from Guatemala and Spain also attended a ski service.  A man named Mike emailed me to tell me how grateful and encouraged he was to attend the service on the mountain.  The ski chaplains go the second mile.  They’d finished doing the service the first time when a couple skied up and asked if it was too late to have church so the ski chaplains did the service again.  Jessica read a familiar passage from 1 John.  The woman had never heard that Bible verse.  The woman said that it gave her something to think about as she skied.  We are blessed to plant and water so many seeds for Jesus.

Prayer requests:

·       Continue to pray for snow for our area.

·       Pray for open hearts to the gospel for our children, parents, and people we meet on the ski slopes.
